Excerpt from The Philosophical Dictionary, Vol. 4 of 4 Or the Opinions of Modern Philosophers on Metaphysical, Moral, and Political Subjects

But what is that life? Is the foul immortal in its own nature? A limited comprehenfion is in capable Of conceiving any thing that is unlimited. Whatever we call infinite is beyond human con ception. We can neither deny nor affirm; we can employ no arguments on fubjefls we cannot conceive. Nothing is more probable than that the foul furvives the body fo long as is necefl'ary to juftify Providence in the good order of things; every rational man will adopt that as an article. Of faith; but who knows that the foul will fur; vive the body for ever? 'we may readily conceive how mateiial bodies wear away and are deitroyed by the feparation Of their parts; but we cannot conceive a like difiblution of a thinking being and hence, as we cannot imagine how it can die, we may prefume it cannot die at all.

The Philosophical Dictionary Vol 4 of 4 Or the Opinions of Modern Philosophers on Metaphysical Moral and Political Subjects Classic Reprint Franz Swediaur 9781333137625 Books Reviews

  • This book was recommended by our local priest. It helps when reading various religious books to be able to look up items.
  • Ideal for the bookshelves of anyone interested in philosophy, ancient or

modern. Gives you useful articles on the terms used in much of the modern

literature. The fact that the authors are priests may cause some to fear

that they are being dished up some artful propaganda no the reader will

find that the contents are free of bias and are an aid for anyone -

agnostic or otherwise - in search of wisdom. And last but not least good

value as well for the student.
